Windows File Protection Event ID 64021 When You Install Hotfix (262004)

SYMPTOMS

After you install a hotfix that contains files that need to be renamed on the target computer, the following message is displayed in the system event log:
Source: Windows File Protection
Event ID: 64021
Description: The system file c:\winnt\system32\ntoskrnl.exe could not be copied into the DLL Cache. The specific Error Code is 0x00000002. (The system cannot find the file specified). This file is necessary to maintain system stability.
NOTE: For example, this behavior occurs with fixes that contain the Windows NT kernel when you are running on a multiple-processor computer.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs because Windows File Protection (WFP) does not handle renaming files during installation correctly.

RESOLUTION

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in Microsoft Windows 2000. This problem was first corrected in Windows 2000 Service Pack 1.
