No APM Support for Dell Latitude Computers Running Windows Millennium Edition (261899)
The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition
This article was previously published under Q261899 If this article does not describe your hardware-related issue, please see the following Microsoft Web site to view more articles about hardware: SYMPTOMS
When you upgrade some Dell Latitude computers to Windows Millennium Edition, the computers may continue to have Advanced Power Management
(APM) enabled. Rather than use APM, the computers should be upgraded to Advanced Configuration and Power Interface (ACPI).
CAUSE
These systems have BIOS issues in APM mode that remain unresolved.
RESOLUTION
To prevent this issue, please contact Dell to obtain a new BIOS and tool to run before upgrading to Windows Millennium Edition. The new BIOS and tool enable ACPI and add driver support.
If you have already installed Windows Millennium Edition, it may be necessary to uninstall Windows Millennium Edition, perform the BIOS upgrade and run the tool, and then reinstall Windows Millennium Edition.
STATUS
Dell is only supporting ACPI on their Latitude systems under Windows Millennium Edition, but Latitude systems all shipped in APM mode in Windows 98 Second Edition.
