Panasonic SQ-TC510N 5-Disk CD-ROM Changer Displays Ten CD-ROM Drives in Windows Explorer After Upgrade (261878)

SYMPTOMS

When you upgrade your computer from Microsoft Windows 95 to Microsoft Windows 98, Microsoft Windows 98 Second Edition, or Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition (Me) with a Panasonic SQ-TC510N 5-disk CD-ROM Changer installed, multiple CD-ROM drive icons may be displayed in Windows Explorer and in My Computer.

NOTE: Before you upgrade your Windows 95-based computer, only five CD-ROM drive icons may be displayed in Windows Explorer and in My Computer, one for each compact disc tray in the CD-ROM changer.

CAUSE

This behavior may occur because the SmartCD program that is included with the Panasonic SQ-TC510N 5-disk CD-ROM Changer is designed for Microsoft Windows 3.1 and Windows 95.

WORKAROUND

To work around this behavior, you can use either of the following two methods:

In Control Panel, double-click Add/Remove Programs, and then uninstall the SmartCD program.

Configure the SmartCD program to use the Drive Letter Per Device feature, by performing the following steps:
1. In the system tray, right-click SmartCD Configuration.
2. Click Configuration.
3. Change the device setting from Drive Letter Per Slot to Drive Letter Per Device.
4. Restart your computer.

In Windows 95, the SmartCD configuration program that is included with the Panasonic SQ-TC510N 5-disk CD-ROM Changer configures the default device setting to "Drive Letter Per Slot". As a result, each drive is associated with a drive letter. When you upgrade your computer to Windows 98 or Windows Me, the operating system indicates the presence of each drive twice, and therefore, 10 drive letters are displayed on your computer.
