SYMPTOMS

When you are using a Microsoft Windows Millennium-based computer and you view the Driver File Details dialog box for a network adapter, you may notice that the Dc21x4.sys, rtl8139.sys, or E100bnt5.sys driver or drivers may list File is not installed in place of the driver file information for Provider, File version, and Copyright.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur when the driver is copied to the %windir%\System32\Drivers directory. Only drivers that reside in the %windir%\System directory display the driver file details in Device Manager. This occurs with a network interface card that uses the MPX EN5038 chip. These cards may come from a variety of manufacturers, including but not limited to: Compaq, Hewlett-Packard, Accton, RealTek, and SMZ.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
