SYMPTOMS

Before upgrading your system to Microsoft Windows Millennium, your Acer 310S scanner is listed as Acer 310S scanner in the Device Manager. You upgrade your system to Windows Millennium from your previous operating system and now your Acer 310S scanner is listed in the Device Manager's Other category as Color Flatbed Scanner. The Acer 310S scanner continues to work properly.

You can reinstall Acer's software for the 310S scanner, but it still leaves the scanner in the Other category.

CAUSE

The Acer 310S scanner's device driver (.inf file) contains a System class that is not recognized by Windows Millennium.

MORE INFORMATION

To see the listing for the scanner, follow these steps:
  1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
  2. Double-click System.
  3. Click the Device Manager tab.

Windows Millennium does not include the Scanner class present in Microsoft Windows 98 Second Edition. The Imaging Devices class used by Windows Millennium is only for device drivers that are compliant with still image architecture (STI). Because the device driver for this scanner is not STI-compliant and does not contain a System class that is recognized by Windows Millennium, it is listed in the Other class.

The Acer 310S scanner continues to work properly because the kernel mode driver finds the scanner's hardware and can export the symbolic link, allowing the TWAIN data source to operate.
