WordPerfect 6.0 Does Not Start from a PIF File in Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition (261673)
The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition
This article was previously published under Q261673 SYMPTOMS
When you upgrade from Microsoft Windows 98 Gold to Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition (Me), you may be unable to start WordPerfect 6.0 from a Program Information File (PIF).
Instead, MS-DOS-based virtual memory starts with the following error message:
LC: Windows 3.x Enhanced mode detected, Task Swap API disabled
CAUSE
This behavior occurs because real mode does not exist in Windows Me; therefore, Windows Me does not load Command.com. The PIF file does not start a program unless Command.com is opened first.
RESOLUTION
To work around this issue, follow these steps:
- Click Start, and then click Run.
- Type dosprmpt.pif, and then click OK.
- Change to the drive to where WordPerfect 6.0 is located, and then press ENTER.
- Type WP, and then press ENTER.
