VGA "640 x 480 x 16" Setting Is Not Checked When You Install a Standard VGA Driver with "640 x 480 x 16" Setting (261536)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition

This article was previously published under Q261536

SYMPTOMS

When you view your display settings by clicking Advanced on the General tab of the Msconfig.exe tool, the VGA 640 x 480 x 16 check box is not selected, even though you are using this resolution.

CAUSE

This occurs because the Msconfig.exe tool determines if the computer is in standard VGA mode by looking for the line "display.drv=vga.drv" in the [boot] section of the System.ini file. However, the computer can also be in standard VGA mode if "display.drv=pnpdrvr.drv" is found. This means that the video driver is obtained from the registry entry.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, you can safely ignore this check box.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
