PPT98: Slides Look Bad When Saved as HTML (261474)
The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft PowerPoint 98 Macintosh Edition
This article was previously published under Q261474 SYMPTOMS
When you use the Save as HTML Wizard, Microsoft PowerPoint exports the GIF or JPEG slide images at a size of 719 x 539 pixels, regardless of the Width of Graphics setting that you choose in the wizard. This causes the slide image to appear distorted, fuzzy, pixelated, or stretched on the Web page.
CAUSE
PowerPoint uses graphic export filters that create slide graphics based on the actual size of the slide, multiplied by approximately 72 dots per inch (dpi). By default, PowerPoint slides are 10 inches wide and 7.5 inches tall, and produce exported graphics that are 719 pixels wide and 539 pixels tall.
However, PowerPoint generates HTML pages that set the display size of the graphic independent of the actual image size. So, if you choose to make the HTML page 1/2 screen width at 800 x 600 monitor resolution, the display size is 400 x 300 pixels, compressing the actual image.
WORKAROUND
To work around this limitation, resize the actual slide dimensions so that the exported graphics best match the width of the graphics that you want.
Sizing Table
The following table shows the proper slide size (in inches) based on screen resolution and the Width of Graphics setting. The first number in each entry is the width, the second is the height.
Monitor | 640 | 800 | 1024 | 1200 |
Resolution | x 480 | x 600 | x 768 | x 1024 |
---------------------------------------------------------
Slide Size: | | | | |
Full width | 8.88 | 11.11 | 14.22 | 16.66 |
of screen | x 6.66 | x 8.33 | x 10.66 | x 14.22 |
---------------------------------------------------------
3/4 width | 6.66 | 8.33 | 10.66 | 12.50 |
of screen | x 5.00 | x 6.25 | x 8.00 | x 10.66 |
---------------------------------------------------------
1/2 width | 3.33 | 5.55 | 7.11 | 8.33 |
of screen | x 2.50 | x 4.16 | x 5.33 | x 7.11 |
---------------------------------------------------------
1/4 width | 2.22 | 2.77 | 3.55 | 4.16 |
of screen | x 6.66 | x 2.08 | x 2.66 | x 3.55 |
---------------------------------------------------------
To resize your slides, follow these steps:
- On the File menu, click Page Setup.
- In the Width and Height boxes, type the appropriate values from the above table.
- Click OK.
NOTE: Some objects may not be resized with the slide. You must manually resize these items to fit on the slide. Anything that you put into a placeholder frame should resize normally.
