OFF2000: Administrative Installation Folder Increases Significantly in Size (261469)
The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft Office 2000 (Setup) Service Release 1 (SR-1)
This article was previously published under Q261469 SYMPTOMS
After you apply the SR-1 Administrator Update to your Office 2000 administrative installation, the size of the administrative installation is now significantly larger. For example, if you have an administrative installation of Office 2000 Premium, the installation may increase from 550 MB to almost 900 MB.
Also, if you run Setup from this updated administrative installation on a client where you already installed Office, the Office programs will not be updated to Service Release 1 (SR-1).
CAUSE
This problem occurs if you do not use SHORTFILENAMES=1 (or SHORTFILENAMES=True) on the command line when you apply the SR-1 Administrator Update. In this case, the \PFiles folder on your administrative installation is not updated. Instead, a new folder called \Program Files is created with the SR-1 updates.
RESOLUTION
To resolve this problem, follow these steps:
- Remove the Program Files folder from your Office administrative installation.
- Apply the SR-1 Administrator Update to your Office administrative installation again, by using a command line similar to the following:
msiexec /a path to server\Data1.msi /p path\Data1.msp SHORTFILENAMES=1
- From your network clients, run Setup from the administrative installation to update them to Office 2000 SR-1.
If you already ran Setup from the administrative installation that contained the Program Files folder, and your clients were not correctly updated to SR-1, follow these steps:
- Run Setup.exe from the now properly configured administrative installation.
- In the Microsoft Office 2000 Maintenance Mode dialog box, click Repair Office.
- In the Reinstall/Repair Microsoft Office 2000 dialog box, click Reinstall Office.
- Click Finish.
