This article was previously published under Q261451 SYMPTOMS
When you change the properties of an MS-DOS-based .exe file that has a file name with more than eight characters, and then run the file, the changes may not be applied properly.
CAUSE
When you change the properties of an MS-DOS-based .exe files with long file names (more than 8.3 characters), a .pif file with a shorter file name is created. This file is associated with the MS-DOS-based .exe file. When you run the original file, the .pif file settings are not read.
RESOLUTION
To resolve this issue, run the .pif file associated with the MS-DOS-based .exe file, instead of the MS-DOS-based .exe file.
STATUSMicrosoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
