General Protection Fault in Smdrv.drv with a Silicon Motion Lynx EM Video Adapter (261360)

When you try to change the video resolution on your Windows Millennium Edition-based computer, you may receive the following error message:
RUNDLL32 caused a GPF in SMDRV.DRV.
After you receive this error message, your mouse may no longer work.
CAUSE
This issue can occur if you are using a Silicon Motion Lynx EM video adapter. The Silicon Motion Lynx EM video adapter driver is not fully compatible with Windows Millennium Edition (Me).
RESOLUTION
To resolve this issue, contact the manufacturer of your video adapter to inquire about the availability of updated drivers for your video adapter.
To work around this issue, you can use the Standard Video Adapter (VGA) driver:
- Click Start, point to Settings, click Control Panel, and then double-click Display.
- On the Settings tab, click Advanced.
- On the Adapter tab, note the name of your current video driver, and then click Change.
- Click Next, click Display a list of all the drivers in a specific location, so you can select the driver you want, and then click Next.
- Click Show All Devices, and then click (Standard Display Types) in the Manufacturers box.
- In the Models box, click Standard Display Adapter (VGA), and then click OK.
- Click Next, click Next, click Next, and then click Finish.
- Click Close, and then click Close.
- When you are prompted to restart the computer, click Yes.
