Computer Does Not Enter Standby or Hibernate Mode with Altec Lansing ACS-495 USB Speakers Attached (261357)

SYMPTOMS

When you want your computer to enter Standby or Hibernate mode and you use the Shutdown command on the Start menu, the system begins to enter Standby or Hibernate (low-power) mode but does not turn off successfully. After the system unsuccessfully attempts to enter Hibernate or Standby, the Nohiber.txt file (located in the C:\Windows directory) logs information on the ACS-495 speakers.

CAUSE

The Altec Lansing ACS-495 USB speakers do not have hibernate-compliant device drivers and prevent the computer from entering low-power Hibernate or Standby mode.

WORKAROUND

To work around this issue, disable the speakers in Device Manager. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
  2. Click the Device Manager tab.
  3. Click the plus sign (+) next to USB Host controllers.
  4. Double-click Altec Lansing Multimedia USB Speakers - ACS-495.
  5. Click to clear the Disable this hardware profile check box.
  6. Click OK, and then click OK again to close the System Properties window.
  7. On the taskbar, click Start, and then click Shut Down.
  8. In the Shut Down Windows dialog box, click Restart, and then click OK.
  9. When the computer has finished restarting, click Hibernate or Standby in the Shut Down Windows dialog box again.

When you follow the steps in the Resolution section to disable the speakers, the speakers play audio, but advanced controls for sound quality and volume are disabled.
