SYMPTOMS

After an upgrade to Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition (Me), Microsoft Word versions 6.0 and 6.0a do not restart the system from Maintenance Mode after you click Continue. This problem also occurs in Microsoft Word 6.0c when you click Restart Windows.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, follow these steps:
  1. In Maintenance Mode, click Cancel (in 6.0 and 6.0a) or Exit Setup (in 6.0c), and then click OK in the subsequent dialog boxes.
  2. Quit the Setup program and restart Windows Me using the Windows Me Startup CD-ROM.
  3. Run Windows\_MSRSTRT.EXE. (This replaces and/or removes any components that the Setup program couldn't act on because they were being used by the system.)
  4. Restart Windows Me.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
