SYMPTOMS

When you are playing EA Sports NHL 98 on a Windows Millennium Edition-based computer, using an NEC PlayPad USB game controller, and you attempt to configure the NEC PlayPad controller within NHL 98, the game may close, returning you to the desktop.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur because EA Sports NHL 98 does not support game controllers with names more than 42 characters long.

WORKAROUND

To work around this behavior, use the Game Controllers tool in Control Panel to create a custom device, and give the device a shorter name.

MORE INFORMATION

The NEC PlayPad name exceeds 42 characters in JOY.CPL. It appears as "HID Game Controller: 2 axis 10 button gamepad"

To create a custom device, follow these steps:
  1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
  2. Double-click Game Controllers, and then click Add on the General tab.
  3. Click Custom, click the correct Axes and Buttons specifications and any special characteristics, and then type a name of fewer than 42 characters.
  4. Click OK, and then click OK again.
