OFF2000: Error Message: "Another Version of This Product Is Already Installed" When You Run Setup After Administrative Install Is Updated to SR-1 (261145)

After you update your Office 2000 administrative installation to Service Release 1 (SR-1), you may receive the following error message when you try to run Setup from the installation:
Another version of this product is already installed. Installation of this version cannot continue. To configure or remove the existing version of this product, use Add/Remove Programs on the Control Panel.
CAUSE
This problem occurs if the following are true:
- You created your administrative installation by using an edition of Office 2000 other than Premium. This includes the following editions:
- Small Business
- Standard
- Professional
- All stand-alone Office programs
- You updated the administrative installation with the SR-1 Administrator Update.
The SR-1 Administrator Update modified the Autorun.inf file with information that is only relevant to Office 2000 Premium.
RESOLUTION
To resolve this problem, follow these steps:
- Open the Autorun.inf file on your administrative installation by using any text editor.
- Comment out the following two lines in the [ProductInformation] section of this file:
ProductCode={00000409-78E1-11D2-B60F-006097C998E7}
DisplayName=Microsoft Office 2000 Premium
To comment out these lines, add a semi-colon (;) to the beginning of the line. - Using any text editor, open the Autorun.inf file from the Office CD that you used to create the administrative installation.
- Copy the ProductCode and DisplayName lines from the [ProductInformation] section of this file, and paste them into the [ProductInformation] section of the copy of Autorun.inf on your administrative installation.
- Save and close this modified copy of Autorun.inf on your administrative installation.
- Run Setup again from the administrative installation on your network client.
STATUSMicrosoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
