SYMPTOMS

After you update your Office 2000 administrative installation to Service Release 1 (SR-1), you may receive the following error message when you try to run Setup from the installation:
Another version of this product is already installed. Installation of this version cannot continue. To configure or remove the existing version of this product, use Add/Remove Programs on the Control Panel.

CAUSE

This problem occurs if the following are true:
  • You created your administrative installation by using an edition of Office 2000 other than Premium. This includes the following editions:

    • Small Business
    • Standard
    • Professional
    • All stand-alone Office programs
  • You updated the administrative installation with the SR-1 Administrator Update.
The SR-1 Administrator Update modified the Autorun.inf file with information that is only relevant to Office 2000 Premium.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, follow these steps:
  1. Open the Autorun.inf file on your administrative installation by using any text editor.
  2. Comment out the following two lines in the [ProductInformation] section of this file:

    ProductCode={00000409-78E1-11D2-B60F-006097C998E7}
    DisplayName=Microsoft Office 2000 Premium

    To comment out these lines, add a semi-colon (;) to the beginning of the line.
  3. Using any text editor, open the Autorun.inf file from the Office CD that you used to create the administrative installation.
  4. Copy the ProductCode and DisplayName lines from the [ProductInformation] section of this file, and paste them into the [ProductInformation] section of the copy of Autorun.inf on your administrative installation.
  5. Save and close this modified copy of Autorun.inf on your administrative installation.
  6. Run Setup again from the administrative installation on your network client.

STATUS
