This article was previously published under Q261121 SYMPTOMS
If you have a simple signaling universal power supply (UPS) attached to a Windows 2000-based computer, the UPS does not power off after a system shutdown. This behavior is different from using the same UPS with Microsoft Windows NT 4.0.
CAUSE
This behavior is caused by a change in Windows 2000. In Windows NT 4.0, processes can run with limited resources after the shutdown. This allows the Windows NT 4.0 UPS service driver to signal the UPS to turn off over the serial port. In Windows 2000, all processes are automatically terminated by the operating system during shutdown. This prevents the UPS service driver from signaling the UPS to power down after shutdown.
RESOLUTION
There is currently no workaround for this behavior. However, some UPSs allow you to set an internal timer that turns off the UPS automatically when it is running on battery power and there is no load.
STATUS
This behavior is by design.
