Corrupted Repository Can Cause Problems with the WMI Subsystem (260935)

SYMPTOMS

When you run software that uses Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI), the requested information may not be retrieved. Msinfo32.exe may not return valid information, and other WMI functions may not work.

CAUSE

If an event occurs that damages the repository and there is no usable recovery file, all functionality of the WMI subsystem may be lost.

The repository must be corrupted (possibly from an incorrect shutdown), and the recovery file must be unusable before the system attempts to recompile the MOF files (which is a last resort) to restore system data.

RESOLUTION

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in Microsoft Windows 2000.

This problem was first corrected in Windows 2000 Service Pack 1.
