PRB: Platform Builder IDE May Not Terminate Completely (260842)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Windows CE Platform Builder 2.12

This article was previously published under Q260842

SYMPTOMS

When you close the Windows CE Platform Builder Integrated Development Environment (IDE), the IDE may not completely terminate, even after the main application window and taskbar icon disappear. The remaining Cepb.exe program holds resources that may cause subsequent invocations of the IDE to function improperly.

CAUSE

The most common cause of this problem is a failed kernel debugger connection. If the debugger is activated, but does not successfully make a connection to a device, the debugger subsystem becomes blocked and does not terminate.

RESOLUTION

After closing the Platform Builder IDE, check the system Task Manager process list for remaining instances of Cepb.exe, and then manually terminate them. The procedure is as follows:
  1. Close Platform Builder.
  2. Right-click the task bar and select Task Manager from the menu.
  3. Click the Processes tab.
  4. Examine the process list for Cepb.exe in the image name column.
  5. If Cepb.exe exists, click it, and then click the End Process button.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a bug in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
