FP2000: Problems When You Attempt to Connect to Web with Unique Permissions (260755)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft FrontPage 2000

This article was previously published under Q260755

SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to connect to a Web that is configured with unique permissions, and you use a name with different capitalization than was used when the Web was created, one of the following symptoms may occur:
  • The unique permissions may not appear.
  • The Web may appear to be using the same permissions as the parent Web.
  • You cannot open the Web, and you receive the following error message in FrontPage:
The folder folder name isn't accessible. The folder may be located on an unavailable volume or protected with a password.

CAUSE

FrontPage does not correctly recognize the "RealmName" information for the Web.

Webs that use unique permissions have a "RealmName" that is defined in a file named Access.cnf, which is located in the _vti_pvt folder of the Web. This information is case-sensitive.

The following is an example of an Access.cnf file:

vti_encoding:SR|utf8-nl
RealmName:test
InheritPermissions:false
PasswordDir:c:\\inetpub\\wwwroot\\test\\_vti_pvt
UseRealm:/test

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, use one of the following methods:
  • Always use lowercase letters when you create and open Webs.
  • Open the Web through the parent Web.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.

MORE INFORMATION

Regardless of any incorrect information that may be displayed in the FrontPage Permissions dialog box, the unique permissions that were applied to the Web are still in place. Only users who were given access can open or browse the Web.
