SUMMARY

SMARTVSD is used by application programs to acquire S.M.A.R.T data from hard disk drives. There is a limitation on the number of hard disk drives that SMARTVSD can access. This limitation is by design. SMARTVSD was designed to work with primary Integrated Device Electronics (IDEs) and secondary IDE interfaces, thereby limiting the number of hard disk drives that SMARTVSD can access to four hard disk drives.

To support all available hard disk drives in a system, an application should have its own driver to interface with the hard disk. To do this, the driver should use the IOR_IDE_PASS_THROUGH command, and the driver for the IDE controller should also support IOR_IDE_PASS_THROUGH.
