This article was previously published under Q260523

SUMMARY

Exchange 2000 Server allows you to configure connectors to allow or deny system messages and non-system messages. You may need to use Exchange 2000 connectors to deliver system messages only or to deliver non-system messages only. You may need to do so to reduce operation costs because of dedicated lines or the amount of data transferred over one particular connector type.

MORE INFORMATION

You can configure a connector by selecting or clearing any combination of the System messages or Non-system messages check boxes to specify types of outgoing messages that will be delivered through this connector. System messages are messages from the Exchange 2000 or Windows 2000 system, rather than messages from users. Examples of system messages are directory replication messages, public folder replication messages, Exchange Monitoring Tool messages, delivery reports, and non-delivery reports. Non-system messages are messages from users, groups, and contacts.

This option is available on the following connectors: Internet Mail Connector, Routing Group Connector, and X.400 Connector. By default, each of these connectors is configured to allow both system messages and non-system messages.

NOTE: In Microsoft Exchange Server 5.5, this option is only available on the X.400 Connector.

If you need to change the default settings for any reason, you can do so by following these steps:
  1. Start Exchange System Manager.
  2. Right-click the required connector, and then click Properties.
  3. Click the Content Restrictions tab.
  4. Under Allowed types, make the changes you want by clicking to select or clicking the clear the System messages or Non-system messages check boxes.
  5. Stop and restart the Message Transfer Agent service.
