  • Microsoft Project 98 for Windows

This article was previously published under Q260436

SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft Project 98, when you open a project, you may receive the following error message:
"[project name]" contains linked information.

Do you want to reestablish the links?

* If you want to update this information by accessing the linked project or the linked program file, click Yes.

* If you do not want to update this information and you want to use the existing information instead, click No.
After you click either Yes or No, you receive the following error message:
This is not a valid field name.

Click a field name in the list, and then press ENTER.

CAUSE

These error messages occur when you do the following:
  1. In Microsoft Project 2000, you create OLE links in a field that does not exist in Microsoft Project 98, and then save the project in the Microsoft Project 98 file format.
  2. You open the project in Microsoft Project 98.

WORKAROUND

There is no workaround for this problem. If you need to save in the Microsoft Project 98 format from Microsoft Project 2000, avoid creating OLE links in fields that are new to Microsoft Project 2000.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
