In Microsoft Project, when you select an outline code from an outline code field's list, you receive the following error message:
The value entered does not fit the code mask defined for the custom outline code field.
The code should be in the format "*".
CAUSE
This error message may occur when the outline codes defined in the lookup table are not valid.
RESOLUTION
Define valid outline codes in the lookup table for the outline code field that you are using. To do this, follow these steps:
- On the Tools menu, point to Customize, and then click Fields.
- In the Type list, click Outline Code. Click the outline code that you are using.
- Click Define Outline Code.
- Note the value listed under Sequence.
- Click Edit Lookup Table.
- Verify that the outline code defined in the lookup table is appropriate for the sequence that you noted in step 4. For example, if the Sequence setting is Characters, the lookup table needs to contain characters not numbers.
