PUB2000: Cannot Filter or Sort DBF Files with Mail-Merge Feature (260177)

SYMPTOMS

When you use the Filter or Sort command to limit the number of records that you want to appear in a mail-merge document, the mail-merge document may include all of the records that are contained in the mail-merge data source file.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur if the the mail-merge data source file is in the .dbf format.

RESOLUTION

To work around this issue, convert the .dbf file into one of the following ASCII text formats:
  • Tab delimited format (Text,Tab Delimited *.txt)

  • Comma delimited format (Text, Comma Delimited *.csv)
Please refer to your database software documentation to find out how to convert a .dbf file into one of these formats.

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
