This article describes the different installation methods that you can use when you run Outlook Setup. This article also describes how to switch between the different installation methods that Outlook uses.

Each installation method determines how Outlook runs on your computer. After Outlook is installed on your computer, you can change the installation method that Outlook uses.

Installation Methods

Run from My ComputerThe feature is installed and stored on your hard drive.
Run all from My ComputerThe feature and all of its subfeatures are installed and stored on your hard drive.
Run all from NetworkThis option appears only if you install the feature from a network server. The feature and all of its subfeatures are never copied to your hard drive. The files that use this feature remain on the network server that the feature was installed from. Features that are installed by using this method require access to that network server to be available.
Run from CDThis option only appears if you install the feature from a CD. The feature is never copied to your hard drive. The files that are needed to use the feature remain on the CD that the feature was installed from. Features that are installed by using this method require access to the CD to be available. For example, if you install a feature from the CD, and then you try to use the feature when the CD is not in the CD-ROM drive, you are prompted to insert the CD into the CD-ROM drive to use the feature.
Run all from CDThis option appears only if you install the feature from a CD. The feature and all of its subfeatures are never copied to your hard drive; the files that are needed to use the feature remain on the CD that the feature was installed from. Features installed by using this method require access to the CD to be available. For example, if you install a feature from the CD, and then you try to use the feature when the CD is not in the CD-ROM drive, you are prompted to insert the CD into the CD-ROM drive to use the feature.
Installed on First UseThe feature is installed on your hard drive when you use the feature for the first time. At that time, you need access to the CD or network server that you installed from. This option may not be available for all features.
Not AvailableThe feature is not installed. You can install it later if you want.


If you want to change the installation method, you must reinstall Outlook and set the installation method to Run from My Computer or Run all from My Computer. This allows you to start Outlook without the Outlook CD.

Change the Installation Method

  1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
  2. Double-click Add/Remove Programs. On Microsoft Windows 2000, click Change or Remove Programs.
  3. Click the Install/Uninstall tab, click Microsoft Office 2000, and then click Add/Remove. On Windows 2000, click Microsoft Office 2000, and then click Change.
  4. In the Microsoft Office 2000 Maintenance Mode dialog box, click Add or Remove Features.
  5. Click Microsoft Outlook for Windows, and then click the arrow.
  6. Click Run from My Computer, and then click Update Now.
  7. Click OK.
  8. In the Add/Remove Programs Properties dialog box, click OK.
Outlook now starts from your computer without the Outlook CD.

Change the Installation Method of a Component

You can use different methods to run individual component features.
  1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
  2. Double-click Add/Remove Programs. On Windows 2000, click Change or Remove Programs.
  3. Click the Install/Uninstall tab, click Microsoft Office 2000, and then click Add/Remove. On Windows 2000, click Microsoft Office 2000, and then click Change.
  4. From the Microsoft Office 2000 Maintenance Mode dialog box, click Add or Remove Features.
  5. Click the plus sign (+) that is next to Microsoft Outlook for Windows to expand the branch of features.
  6. Click the optional feature that you want, click the installation method that you want to use, and then click Update Now.
  7. Click OK.
  8. In the Add/Remove Programs Properties dialog box, click OK.
