The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Excel 97 for Windows

This article was previously published under Q260034

SYMPTOMS

When you check the spelling in a worksheet, the spelling checker does not not make suggestions from words that you have previously added to the custom dictionary.

CAUSE

Microsoft Excel does not make spelling suggestions from the custom dictionary file (Custom.dic).

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.

MORE INFORMATION

In Microsoft Excel, when you check the spelling in a worksheet, you can add new words to the custom dictionary. When the spelling checker encounters these added words, it recognizes them and does not flag them as misspelled words. However, if the spelling checker encounters a word it does not recognize, it does not make suggestions from the custom dictionary.

For more information about the spelling checker, click the Office Assistant, type check spelling, click Search, and then click to view "Check spelling or automatically correct spelling errors."
