You receive the "The feature you are trying to use is on a CD-ROM or other removable disk that is not available" when you apply the Office 2000 Service Release 1 (SR-1) update to your Office 2000 installation (258849)

SYMPTOMS

When you apply the Microsoft Office 2000 Service Release 1 (SR-1) Update to your Office 2000 installation, you may receive the following error message:
The feature you are trying to use is on a CD-ROM or other removable disk that is not available.

Insert the 'Office 2000 product' disk and click OK.
where Office 2000 product is the name of the Office program that you are using.

You may receive this error message even though your Office 2000 CD is currently in the CD-ROM drive.

CAUSE

This problem can occur if your existing Office 2000 installation needs to be repaired.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, follow these steps:
  1. If the error message is still displayed, click Cancel.
  2. Click OK in the next dialog box, which informs you of a 1706 error.
  3. Click OK in the next dialog box, which advises you to see the log file for the SR-1 Update.
  4. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
  5. Double-click Add/Remove Programs.
  6. Double-click the icon for the Office 2000 program that you want to update.
  7. In the Microsoft Office 2000 Maintenance Mode dialog box, click Repair Office.
  8. In the Reinstall/Repair Microsoft Office 2000 dialog box, click Reinstall Office, and then click Finish.
  9. When the repair process is finished, run the SR-1 Update again.
If this procedure does not resolve the problem, Windows Installer may need to be updated. Use the following steps to update Windows Installer.

NOTE: If you are using Microsoft Windows 2000, do not use these steps. The version of Windows Installer that is included with Windows 2000 is currently the latest version.
  1. If the error message described in the "Symptoms" section of this article is still displayed, click Cancel.
  2. Click OK in the next dialog box, which informs you of a 1706 error.
  3. Click OK in the next dialog box, which advises you to see the log file for the SR-1 Update.
  4. In Windows Explorer, browse to the C:\Windows\Temp\SR1Patch folder.
  5. Double-click the Msiinstx.exe file in this folder.
  6. Click Yes to the prompt that advises you that Windows Installer needs to restart your system.
  7. After your computer restarts and Windows Installer is updated, run the Office 2000 SR-1 Update again.
NOTE: If you do not see the Msiinstx.exe file in your C:\Windows\Temp\SR1Patch folder, follow the appropriate steps to update Windows Installer:

If You Are Installing Office 2000 SR-1 Update from Tools on the Web Web Site:

  1. If you are using Microsoft Windows 95 or Windows 98, click the following link: If you are using Microsoft Windows NT 4.0, click the following link:
  2. In the File Download dialog box, click Save this program to disk, and then click OK.
  3. Save the file to your desktop.
  4. When the download is complete, double-click the downloaded file.
  5. If you are prompted to restart your computer, click Yes.
  6. After Windows Installer is updated, run the Office 2000 SR-1 Update again.

If You Are Installing Office 2000 SR-1 Update from CD:

  1. If you are using Windows 95 or Windows 98, follow these steps:

    1. Browse on the Office 2000 SR-1 Update CD to the \MSI folder.
    2. Double-click the Instmsi.exe file.
    3. If you are prompted to restart your computer, click Yes.
    If you are using Windows NT 4.0, follow these steps:

    1. Browse on the Office 2000 SR-1 Update CD to the \MSI folder.
    2. Double-click the Instmsiw.exe file.
    3. If you are prompted to restart your computer, click Yes.
  2. After Windows Installer is updated, run the Office 2000 SR-1 Update again.
