SUMMARY

You may receive an error message that indicates the Mapi32.dll file is missing, damaged, or the wrong version. The error message that you receive may be similar to the following error message:
Cannot start Microsoft Outlook. Mapi32.dll is corrupt or the wrong version. This could have been caused by installing other messaging software. Please reinstall Outlook.
This article describes how to replace the Mapi32.dll file.

To replace the Mapi32.dll file:

  1. Quit Outlook.
  2. In Windows Explorer, right-click the Mapi32.dll file in the drive:\Windows\System or drive:\Windows\System32 folder, and then click Rename.
  3. Type Mapi32.old, and then press ENTER.
  4. Copy the Mapi32.dll file from either the Office\Wms\Win95 or Office\Wms\Winnt folder on your Office 97 CD-ROM in your Windows\System or Windows\System32 folder.

    If you use the Microsoft Office Small Business Edition, copy the Mapi32.dll file from the Outlook\Office\Wms\Win95 folder on your Office 97 CD-ROM in either your Windows\System or Windows\System32 folder.

    For information about how to copy files, click Start, click Help, click the Index tab, type copying, and then click the appropriate Help topic.
  5. In Windows Explorer, right-click the file that you copied on your hard disk, and then click Properties.
  6. Click to clear the Read-Only check box, click to select the Archive check box, and then click OK.
  7. Quit Windows Explorer.
NOTE: The Mapi32.dll file is a system file. If you do not see the Mapi32.dll file on your Office 97 CD:
  1. In Windows Explorer, click Folder Options on the View menu.
  2. Click the View tab.
  3. Under Hidden files, click Show all files, and then click OK.
