PRB: Unable to Start the Debugger Subsystem When Using Platform Builder 2.12 (258825)

SYMPTOMS

If you use the IDE debugger from Platform Builder version 2.12, the following error message may be displayed:
Unable to start the debugger subsystem

CAUSE

The registry key "2.12" that is located under the registry branch HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows CE Platform Builder may have been corrupted.

RESOLUTION

WARNING: If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that you can solve problems that result from using Registry Editor incorrectly. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.

To resolve this problem, follow these steps:
  1. Close Platform Builder 2.12.
  2. Use a registry editor on the system where Platform Builder is installed to open the HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows CE Platform Builder branch and rename the "2.12" subkey.
  3. Run Platform Builder; it will rebuild the "2.12" key on startup using information from the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE data and internal static defaults.
  4. Try the debugger. If the problem is not resolved, delete the new "2.12" key and rename the original back to restore user customizations that would have been lost. If the problem is resolved, delete the original renamed key. Some user settings will need to be restored through Platform Builder.
