SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to install Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server to join an existing Microsoft Exchange Server 5.5 site, you may receive the following error message:
Setup encountered an error while attempting to bind to the Exchange server "[ServerName]":0xC103FC93(64659): The Exchange 5.5 directory service could not be contacted. Please ensure that the service is running properly, that it is listening on the correct port, and that you have the appropriate permissions needed to connect to this server.

CAUSE

The account you are logged on as must have at least Administrator permission on the Exchange Server 5.5 Site and Configuration container.

RESOLUTION

To correct this problem, grant Administrator permission on the Exchange Server 5.5 Site and Configuration container to the account you are logged on as, and then run the Exchange 2000 Setup program again.
