SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to open a file with a .mix file extension, you may receive one of the following error messages:
Microsoft PhotoDraw

The file path\filename could not be opened. It does not appear to be a valid MIX file.
Microsoft Picture It!

The file path\filename could not be opened. It does not appear to be a valid MIX file.
Mixman Studio Error Message #27.

Invalid mix version number.
  • When you dismiss this error message, you may receive the following error message:
    Mixman Studio FX

    Error loading mix file C:\Windows\Temp\

CAUSE

This behavior can occur if the program that you are using to open the .mix file does not recognize the format of the file.

For example, you may receive any of the error messages listed at the beginning of this article if you attempt to open a Mixman sound file in Microsoft PhotoDraw or Microsoft Picture It!, or if you attempt to open a Microsoft PhotoDraw Picture file or a Microsoft Picutre It! file in Mixman Studio.
