SYMPTOMS

When you try to install the Microsoft Fax software package (Awfax.exe) from a Microsoft Windows 98 or Microsoft Windows 98 Second Edition (SE) CD-ROM on a computer running Windows Millennium Edition (Me), you receive the following error message:
This program is incompatible with this version of Windows. To exit, click Cancel. For more information, click Details.
When you click the Details button, the following Help topic error message appears:
Important! Microsoft Fax is not compatible with this version of Windows. If you install this program on a computer running Windows Millennium Edition, your computer may stop responding.

This behavior is by design.

The Microsoft Fax Windows Messaging (also known as "At Work Fax" or "MS Fax") component from Windows 95 is not supported in Windows Me. Using Microsoft Fax in Windows Me may result in errors or data loss, or both.

Microsoft Fax is a component developed and tested for Windows 95. No testing or development has been done for this component in Windows Me. As a result, Microsoft Product Support Services (PSS) does not support the use or configuration of Microsoft Fax with Windows Me.

IMPORTANT In order to have faxing capabilities on your Windows Me-based computer, Microsoft recommends you obtain and install a third-party fax program. To help you determine what fax program best suits your specific needs, you could contact a software reseller in your area, search the Internet for fax programs that are compatible with Windows Me, or you can post a message in the Software section of the Windows Me peer-to-peer newsgroup located at: Microsoft Product Support Newsgroups to see what other Windows Me customers are using.
