USB Mouse Redetected in Windows 98 Second Edition (258613)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Windows 98 Second Edition

This article was previously published under Q258613

SYMPTOMS

On a laptop computer that is running Windows 98 Second Edition, a Universal Serial Bus (USB) mouse may be detected again after a suspend/resume operation. However, the USB mouse works properly.

CAUSE

Windows 98 Second Edition treats a USB device as a different device in the slot after a resume operation. The device ID of a USB device changes as follows after a suspend/resume operation (this example is for a LogiTech USB mouse):
  • Before the suspend/resume:

    USB\VID_0471&PID_0104&MI_00\0USB&VID_0471&PID_0104&INST_0

  • After the suspend/resume:

    USB\VID_0471&PID_0104&MI_00\0USB&VID_0471&PID_0104&INST_1

The device ID change occurs at every suspend/resume. However, you see the mouse detected again only once. Two device IDs are enough for such a device ID change.

The USB mouse is redetected only if you hot-plug the USB mouse (plug it in while the computer it on). This behavior does not affect the working of the USB mouse.

STATUS

This behavior is by design.
