The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Windows 95
  • Microsoft Windows 98
  • Microsoft Windows 98 Second Edition

This article was previously published under Q258588

SYMPTOMS

After you install software that updates Telephony Application Programming Interface (TAPI) to version 2.1, you may not be able to send a long distance fax. The fax is processed and the correct phone number seems to be dialed until the Microsoft Fax dialing takes over. The Fax Send dialog box then reports that the number dialed is "h" and the fax is not sent.

CAUSE

The Windows 95 version of the Awfxex32.exe (version 4.0.1002 or earlier) file is not compatible with TAPI 2.1.

RESOLUTION

For Windows 95, please contact Microsoft Product Support Services for the updated file.

For Windows 98 and Windows 98 Second Edition, install Awfax.exe from the Windows 98 CD-ROM. This file is located in the Tools\Oldwin95\Message\US folder.

Windows 95 users who have access to a Windows 98 CD-ROM can also install Awfax.exe to fix this issue.

MORE INFORMATION

Programs known to install TAPI 2.1 include MSN, The Microsoft Network 5.x, Windows 98, and Windows 98 Second Edition.
