Uninstalling WinZip Removes Compressed Folders Functionality in Windows Millennium Edition (258575)

SYMPTOMS

After you uninstall WinZip in Windows Millennium Edition (Me), the Windows Me Compressed Folders functionality does not work correctly. When you double-click a zipped or compressed file or folder, the Open With dialog box appears, prompting you to choose a program to use to view or decompress the file or folder.

CAUSE

The file association for compressed files and folders is a shared resource in the Windows Me registry. Uninstalling WinZip removes the shared resource from the registry and the file association is lost.

RESOLUTION

NOTE: The issue described in this article was resolved in WinZip 8.0(April 25, 2000). Please upgrade to this version.

To resolve this issue i previous versions, reinstall the Windows ME Compressed Folders feature:
  1. Click Start, point to Settings, click Control Panel, and then double-click Add/Remove Programs.
  2. Click the Windows Setup tab.
  3. Click the System Tools component, and then click Details.
  4. Click to clear the Compressed Folders check box, click OK, and then click OK.
  5. When you are prompted to restart your computer, click Yes.
  6. Repeat steps 1 through 3.
  7. Click to select the Compressed Folders check box, click OK, and then click OK.
  8. When you are prompted to restart your computer, click Yes.
