SUMMARY

This article describes how to create separate portfolio data file in MSN Money.

MORE INFORMATION

If you want to track different groups of investments, you can create a new account in your existing portfolio data file.

If you want to create an independent set of accounts, you can create a new Microsoft Passport Network account. A Passport Network account uses a separate portfolio data file.

For example, you may want to use a different portfolio data file for each family member who uses the computer. When you create different portfolios, you can use your individual Passport Network accounts to view your portfolio on any computer that is connected to the Internet.

Create a New Portfolio Account

  1. In Portfolio, under Common Tasks, click Work with Accounts.

Note If you use the Basic Portfolio, click New account.
  2. Click Add an account.
  3. Follow the directions that appear on the screen to create a new account.

Create a Separate MSN Money Investing Portfolio

  1. In Portfolio under Other Tasks, click More.
  2. Click File Options, and then click Backup.
  3. Locate the folder where you want to back up your portfolio data, type the name of the file that you want to use for the data in the File name box, and then click Save. Make sure that you write down the name of the file and the name of the folder where you saved the file.

Note Use a different backup file name for each separate portfolio that you want to track on your computer.
  4. At the top of the MSN Money Investing Web page, click Passport sign out.
  5. On the MSN Money Investing Web page, click Passport sign in.
  6. If you do not have a different Microsoft Passport Network account that you want to use, click the Get one here link, and then follow the instructions that appear on the screen to create a Passport Network account. If you do have a different account, go to the next step.

Note Use a different Passport Network account for each separate portfolio that you want to track on your computer.
  7. In the Sign-in name box and in the Password box, type the e-mail address and the password that you want to use for the new portfolio, and then click Sign In.
  8. Click My Portfolio. If you are prompted to create a new account, do so. If an existing account appears on the screen, modify the account until it contains the data that you want for that portfolio.
  9. To switch between portfolios, sign in to MSN Money Investing by using the Passport Network account that is associated with the portfolio that you want to display.

Note To find the location and the name of your local data file, click More in Other tasks, and then click About Portfolio Manager.
If you do not want to create additional portfolios, you can save independent accounts in backup files. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Click Refresh in your browser to make sure that any recent changes that you have made are saved.
  2. Click More, click File Options, and then click Backup.
  3. Locate the folder where you want to create the backup file, type the name of the backup file, such as Portfolio 1 Backup in the File name box, and then click Save.
  4. Delete the existing accounts from your Portfolio.
  5. Add the new accounts to the Portfolio.
  6. Create another backup file with a different name, such as Portfolio 2 Backup.
  7. To switch between backup files, click More, click File Options, and then click Restore Backup.
You can now select the backup file that you want to restore.
