SYMPTOMS

When you press the Sleep hot key on one of the Microsoft keyboards listed in the "Applies To" section, the screen saver may start unexpectedly. Additionally, the computer may not enter Sleep mode.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur if the following conditions are true:
  • The keyboard is connected to a Microsoft Windows 2000-based computer.
  • Hibernation mode is disabled in the Power Options tool in Control Panel.
  • Your computer does not support hibernation mode.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, use the Power Options tool in Control Panel to select a power scheme that enables hibernation mode:
  1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
  2. Double-click Power Options.
  3. Click the Hibernate tab, and then click to select the Enable hibernate support check box.

NOTE: If the Hibernate tab is not available, your computer does not support this feature.
  4. Click the APM tab, and then click to select the Enable Advanced Power Management support.
  5. Click Apply.
  6. If you are prompted to restart the computer, click No.
  7. Click the Advanced tab.
  8. In the When I press the sleep button on my computer box, click Hibernate.
  9. Click OK.
  10. Restart the computer.

MORE INFORMATION

You can use the Power Options tool in Control Panel to configure the appropriate power consumption settings for the way in which you use your computer and any devices that are connected to your computer. To do this, either create your own power scheme or select one of the pre-set power schemes that are available in Windows 2000.

Power Options Features

You can configure the Power Options tool in Control Panel to do the following:
  • Automatically turn off the monitor and the hard disk after the computer is idle for the selected time.
  • Automatically switch the computer to standby mode after the computer is idle for the selected time.

When the computer switches to standby mode, the entire computer switches into a low-power state, and devices, such as the monitor and the hard disk, are turned off to consume less power. When you want to use the computer again, press any key. The computer quickly wakes up, and your desktop is restored to the state that it was in when your computer switched to standby mode.

Standby mode is especially useful for conserving battery power in portable computers. However, standby mode does not save your desktop state to disk. If you experience a power failure while in standby mode, you may lose unsaved information.
  • Automatically switch the computer to hibernation mode.

When the computer switches to hibernate mode, it saves everything in memory to disk, turns off the monitor and the hard disk, and then turns off the computer. When you restart the computer, your desktop is restored to the state that it was in when your computer switched to hibernation mode.

It takes more time for your computer to wake up from hibernation mode than it does from standby mode.

The Best Way to Use Power Options

If you plan to be away from your computer for a short period of time, such as a few hours, switch your computer to standby mode. If you plan to be away from your computer for a long period of time, such as overnight, switch your computer to hibernation mode.

To use the Power Options tool in Control Panel, your computer must support the Power Options features. For information about whether or not your computer supports these features, consult the printed documentation provided with your computer, or contact your computer manufacturer.
