SYMPTOMS

When you run the Internet Explorer Administration Kit (IEAK) Wizard for the first time, it attempts automatic version synchronization (AVS) and may not finish or may appear to stop responding (hang). No error messages are displayed.

CAUSE

This issue can occur if a proxy server or firewall is filtering data and not allowing the download to finish successfully.

RESOLUTION

Depending on the proxy configuration, one possible resolution is:
  1. Click Start, point to Settings, click Control Panel, and then double-click Internet Options.
  2. On the Advanced tab, locate the HTTP 1.1 Settings section.
  3. Click to select the Use HTTP 1.1 Through Proxy Connections check box.
  4. Click OK.
Additional restrictions that are specified in the proxy configuration may cause this not to work in all environments.

There are two specific problems that may occur on clients located behind a proxy.
  1. If the client is located behind Microsoft Proxy server, then it is best to set the proxy settings on this client to not use the Web Proxy in the IE configuration, and then install the Winsock Proxy Client from the Microsoft Proxy server. Typically, Winsock Proxies are configured less restrictive than are Web proxies and allows the AVS download to complete.
  2. It may also be that initial AVS download attempts have corrupted the IEAK\Download\en directory. It is best to Remove and Reinstall the IEAK to a new directory on each subsequent AVS download attempt while testing different client proxy configurations. This ensures your test results reflect only the client proxy changes.
If these suggestions fail to resolve your AVS download problems, then you should consult with your Proxy administrator for further assistance.
