XADM: "No Site Name Is Available for This Machine" Error Message When You Install the Active Directory Connector (257888)
The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server
This article was previously published under Q257888 SYMPTOMS
When you are installing the Microsoft Exchange 2000 Active Directory Connector (ADC), Setup may fail with the error message:
No Site name is available for this machine.
CAUSE
This problem may be caused by any of the following conditions:
- The Active Directory Connector server is not registered in the Domain Name Service (DNS).
- There are no service records for the domain controller.
- There is no subnet defined for the site.
RESOLUTION
Use the Nltest.exe tool from the Windows 2000 Support Tools to test the trust relationship between the Active Directory Connector server and the domain controller where the ADC computer account is located. At the command prompt, type nltest.exe /dsgetsite, and see if an error is returned. If an error is returned, do the following:
- Check the DNS server and make sure that the ADC server is registered and that there is a reverse lookup zone set up.
- Confirm that service records are created for the domain controller in DNS. To do this:
- Click Start, point to Programs, point to Administrative Tools, and then click DNS.
- Expand the DNS server object to display the Forward Lookup Zones node.
- Expand the Forward Lookup Zones node to display the zone that contains your domain.
- Expand the node with your domain name, and verify that the following four folders exist:
- Define a subnet for the site. To do this:
- Open Active Directory Sites and Services.
- Expand the Sites container.
- Right-click the Subnet container, click New, and then click Subnet.
- Enter the subnet address and mask. This is automatically translated into a subnet name in the form of network/bits-masked.
You may have to reboot the Active Directory Connector server after you make any change to ensure that it picks up the configuration changes.
