Error 645 or 629 Dialing into Windows NT Server (257872)

SYMPTOMS

When you dial a Microsoft Windows NT 4.0-based server, you may receive one of the following error messages.

In Windows 98 and Windows Millennium Edition (Me):
Error 645: Dial-Up Networking could not complete the connection to the server. Check your configuration and try the connection again.
In Windows NT:
Error 629: The data link was terminated by the remote machine.
The following error message is recorded in the Windows NT Event log:
EventID: 20097
Source: Router
A user was unable to connect on port COM2. No more connections can be made to this remote computer because the computer has exceeded its client license limit.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur if the server has run out of licenses.

RESOLUTION

  1. Click Start, point to Settings, click Control Panel, and then double-click Licensing.
  2. Increase the number of Windows NT licenses by clicking Add Licenses.
