The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Server
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional

This article was previously published under Q257838

SYMPTOMS

When a user with a roaming user profile logs off, the following error message may be displayed:
Windows cannot update your roaming profile. Contact your network administrator.

DETAIL - There is not enough space available on the disk.
When the user clicks OK, the system continues and logs the user off without updating the user's server-based profile. Despite the error message, the space available on the roaming user profile server may be more than the size of the user's profile.

CAUSE

The roaming user profile update performs a two-stage copy on the server when the user logs off. To perform the two-stage copy, twice the size of the profile is required on the roaming user profile server.

RESOLUTION

Free twice the size of the user's profile on the roaming user profile server. Also, check to see if disk quotas are enabled. If disk quotas are enabled, at a minimum, be sure that there is twice the size of the user's profile available in the user's quota.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
