SYMPTOMS

After you upgrade your computer to Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition (Me), you may be unable to change or reassign the mouse buttons for the Microsoft IntelliMouse Explorer, Optical, and Web Universal Serial Bus (USB) mouse devices in the Mouse Properties dialog box under Control Panel. This is because these mouse devices may not be listed as options on the Microsoft IntelliPoint menu.

Or, when you try to install the IntelliPoint 3.0 or 3.1 software after performing a clean install of Windows Me, you may receive the following error message:
This program does not run correctly on this version of Windows. To continue, click Run Program. To exit, click Cancel. For more information click Details.
When you click the Details button, a Help message appears that provides steps on how to address this issue.

RESOLUTION

To reassign the button functionality of the IntelliMouse (if Windows Me was installed clean, not as an upgrade), the IntelliPoint software must be downloaded and installed. To do this, go to the following Web site: After you have installed the IntelliPoint software, or if you have upgraded to Windows Me with the IntelliPoint software already installed, follow the steps below to resolve this issue:
  1. Click Start, and then click Run.
  2. In the Open box, type msconfig, and then click OK or press ENTER.
  3. In the System Configuration utility, click the Win.ini folder tab.
  4. Click the plus sign next to [Compatibility95].
  5. Select the entry that starts with "POINT32=", and then click the Edit button.
  6. Change the entry so that it matches the following:

    POINT32=0x00080002

  7. Click OK. When asked if you want to restart the computer, click Yes.
