Unable to Log On to a Secure Site Using a Personal Certificate (257669)

SYMPTOMS

Internet Explorer may damage the private key when a certificate is imported from a .pfx file. Internet Explorer may appear to successfully import the certificate, but you are unable to establish a Secure Socket Layer (SSL) session.

If you attempt to log on to a secure site using the damaged personal certificate, the following error message is displayed:

Internet Explorer cannot open the internet site
https://.......

An error occurred in the secure channel support.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this behavior, delete the damaged certificate and upgrade to Microsoft Internet Explorer 5 or later, or upgrade to Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 Service Pack 6 or later.

WORKAROUND

To work around this behavior, delete the damaged certificate and obtain a new personal certificate.

MORE INFORMATION

This behavior cannot be reproduced at will and may randomly occur with imported personal certificates.
