Cannot Add Standard TCP/IP Port If Portions of the FQDN Exceed 16 Characters (257639)

When you type a fully qualifed domain name (FQDN) in the Printer Name or IP Address box in the Add Standard TCP/IP Printer Port Wizard, you may receive the following error message:
The address is not valid. Please enter a valid address and try again.
This error message occurs if the host name or any of the domain names in the FQDN is longer than 16 characters.
In addition, the Standard TCP/IP Port name should not exceed 48 characters or use extended characters such as "/". If it does, this may generate an error message when you attempt to delete the SPM port and the port may not delete. The only way to delete these port entries is via the registry under:
HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Print\Monitors\Standard TCP/IP Port\Ports\[problem port name].
CAUSE
The Add Printer Wizard does not accept an FQDN that contain entries that are longer than 16 characters.
RESOLUTION
Use the IP address of the print server instead of the FQDN.
STATUSMicrosoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
