You can use several types of programs and tools in Windows to use password protection.

Windows Screen Saver Password

To change the Windows screen saver password:

NOTE: If you are using a third-party screen saver, you may need to contact the manufacturer of the program to obtain information about how to change the password.

1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
2. Double-click Display, and then click the Screen Saver tab.
3. Under Screen Saver, click to select the Password Protected check box, and then click Change.
4. In the New password box, type your new password.
5. In the Confirm new password box, type your new password, click OK, and then click OK.

Windows Password

To change the Windows password:

1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
2. Double-click Passwords, click Change Windows Password, and then click OK. Note that the Password icon may be missing if you do not have a profile or network login for a Windows password. In this case, you typically do not have a password to change.
   
   NOTE: If you cancel the network logon, the Change Passwords tab may not be available. You must log on so the Change Passwords tab will be available.
3. In the Old password box, type your old password, in the New password box, type your new password. In the Confirm new password box, type your new password, click OK, and then click OK.

Other Password Information

Some password settings in Windows may be set by third-party programs. If you are prompted for a password, check the title of the password window for information about which program is asking for the password.

Most Windows passwords are changed by providing an old password, a new password, and then a confirmation of the new password as described earlier in this article.
