This article was previously published under Q257459 SYMPTOMS
You may receive the following error message on a domain controller:
Event ID 1519: A Directory Service Operation Failed Because the Database Has Run
Out of Version Storage
This error message indicates that the server is running out of version storage.
CAUSE
No time limit is enforced on Name Service Provider Interface (NSPI),
so a single client (or very small number of clients) performing an expensive and extended search can run a domain controller out of version store and resources. For example, if a user is performing a Messaging Application Programming Interface (MAPI) name resolution on the letter "m," the query finds every user whose company starts with the letter m (as in Microsoft). The search times out after a couple minutes, but one or two clients performing this search is enough to starve a system with a high update load of version store, and lead
to this behavior.
