SUMMARY

Although Outlook is optimized for use with Microsoft Exchange Server, you can use Outlook with various mail transport systems. You can also use Outlook without a mail transport system and still take advantage of its personal information management features.

Outlook is designed to work with any Messaging Application Programming Interface (MAPI) compliant mail provider. However, several MAPI compliant mail transport systems do not support all of the MAPI specifications necessary to run Outlook successfully. Using a limited MAPI compliant mail system with Microsoft Outlook is not supported by Microsoft; you must contact the vendor of the mail system for technical support.

MORE INFORMATION

The table in this section shows which mail transport systems are supported by Outlook. Depending on the mail transport system you use, some Outlook features may not be available. Only the Microsoft Exchange Server mail transport system allows you to use the entire Outlook feature set.
