Although Outlook is optimized for use with Microsoft Exchange Server, you
can use Outlook with various mail transport systems. You can also use
Outlook without a mail transport system and still take advantage of its personal information management features.
Outlook is designed to work with any Messaging Application Programming Interface (MAPI) compliant mail provider. However, several MAPI compliant mail transport systems do not support all of the MAPI specifications necessary to run Outlook successfully. Using a limited MAPI compliant mail system with Microsoft Outlook is not supported by Microsoft; you must contact the vendor of the mail system for technical support.
