OL97: Error Message: "Can't Find this File" When You Try to Open a Word Template from Outlook (257293)

SYMPTOMS

When you run Outlook and use Microsoft Word as your e-mail editor, if you select a Word template as your default e-mail template, you may receive the following error message:
Microsoft Outlook
Can't find this file. Make sure the path and filename are correct.
You can open the same template from Word.

CAUSE

You may be missing a registry key that Outlook uses to open a Word template.

RESOLUTION

WARNING: If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that you can solve problems that result from using Registry Editor incorrectly. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.

To resolve this problem, you must add the following registry key:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\8.0\Word\Stationery

To add the missing registry key:
  1. Click the Start button, and then click Run. In the Open box, type regedit, and then click OK.
  2. Browse through the folders to the following registry key:

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\8.0\Word

  3. Click the Word registry key. On the Edit menu, point to New, and then click Key. Type Stationery, and then press ENTER.
  4. On the Registry menu, click Exit.
