"Don't Display Last Known User Profile" Setting Has Changed (257283)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Server
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Advanced Server
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional

This article was previously published under Q257283

SYMPTOMS

When an administrator creates a policy file with the Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 Poledit.exe utility to disable displaying the last logged-on user and then sets this policy to be used by all members of the domain, Windows 2000-based computers do not receive the policy.

CAUSE

Windows 2000-based computers do not receive the policy because the registry setting that implements this policy has changed. The policy is applied to Windows NT 4.0-based computers.

RESOLUTION

Workarounds for this situation include:
  • Edit the registry manually on the Windows 2000-based computer. For additional information, click the article number below to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

227458 DontDisplayLastUserName Setting Lost Upgrading from Windows NT

  • Push the change to all Windows 2000-based computers by using a logon script.
  • Edit the Winnt.adm file in the %SystemRoot%\Inf folder. To edit this file, open it in a text editor such as Notepad, search for DontDisplayLastUserName, edit the line just above the line that begins with "KEYNAME", change it to the registry path that is documented in the Microsoft Knowledge Base article listed earlier, and then change the registry value REG_SZ to REG_DWORD. After the changes are made, start Poledit.exe and create a new policy. Set the "Don't Display Last Logon User" policy as before and save the file. You can use the file for Windows 2000-based computers, but it does not work for Windows NT 4.0-based computers. This option is not appropriate if you have a domain with both types of computers that both need the policy applied.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
