Multiple Windows-only Modems Cannot Coexist in Windows 2000 (257246)

SYMPTOMS

When you install multiple Windows-only modems on your Windows 2000-based computer, all but one of the Windows-only modems may not be loaded. In some cases, one or more of the Windows-only modems may seem to load properly, but your computer may generate an error message on a blue screen when you attempt to use the Windows-only modem.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs because the Windows 2000 driver for the Windows-only modem does not support multiple Peripheral Component Interconnect (PCI) or Industry Standard Architecture (ISA) based Windows-only modems of the same manufacturer's chip set in the same computer.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this behavior, contact the Windows-only modem manufacturer to inquire about the availability of a fix for this issue. For information about how to obtain and install the most current driver for this device, view the documentation included with your device, or contact your hardware manufacturer.

To work around this behavior, remove all but one Windows-only modem from the same chip set manufacturer from your Windows 2000-based computer.

MORE INFORMATION

Windows-only modems are not designed by the manufacturer to permit for another Windows-only modem of the same chip set on the same computer. This behavior is a limitation of the Windows-only modem driver.
